Young Carers
At Intuition School, we recognise that some pupils may have caring responsibilities which can impact on their emotional wellbeing, attendance, relationships and ability to engage with learning. The needs of young carers are addressed through our Safeguarding Policy and pastoral support systems.
A member of staff (Samantha Holford) has been identified as the school’s Young Carers Champion and acts as a key point of contact for pupils, families and staff. The Champion ensures that young carers are identified, their needs are understood and appropriate support is provided.
Staff are made aware of how to recognise potential indicators that a pupil may have caring responsibilities and understand the importance of responding sensitively. This is supported through safeguarding updates, staff discussions and our trauma informed approach, which considers the wider circumstances that may affect a young person’s presentation and access to education.
Support for young carers is personalised and may include:
access to a trusted adult within school;
opportunities for pupils to discuss their circumstances and wellbeing;
pastoral support and emotional regulation strategies;
flexibility and reasonable adjustments where caring responsibilities impact attendance or engagement;
support to access learning and wider school opportunities.
The impact of support is monitored through pupil voice, pastoral discussions, attendance information, engagement in learning and ongoing review of individual needs. Where pupils are identified as young carers, staff work closely with the pupil and family to ensure that support is appropriate and effective.
Through this approach, Intuition School ensures that young carers are recognised, valued and supported to achieve positive outcomes.
