Our Weekly Library Visits
Learning, Exploring and Building Confidence in Our Community
At Intuition School, learning goes beyond the classroom. As part of our weekly timetable, our students visit local libraries, providing regular opportunities to develop literacy, independence, communication and important life skills within the wider community.
Our library visits are designed to be relaxed, purposeful and accessible, giving every student the opportunity to engage in a way that works for them.
Making Reading Enjoyable
We want our students to develop a positive relationship with books and reading.
During our weekly visits, students have the freedom to explore the library, browse different sections and discover books and resources that reflect their individual interests. From fiction and graphic novels to factual books about favourite subjects, students are encouraged to make their own choices.
Regular visits help make reading a familiar and enjoyable activity rather than something that only happens during formal lessons.
Developing Essential Life Skills
Our library visits are about much more than choosing a book. They provide valuable opportunities for students to practise skills they can use throughout their lives.
Students can develop their confidence in:
finding and selecting books independently;
using library facilities and understanding how public services work;
speaking to library staff and asking for help;
borrowing and returning items;
taking responsibility for library books;
following expectations within a shared public space;
travelling safely within the local community; and
making choices and becoming increasingly independent.
These experiences allow students to practise skills in real situations, with support from familiar Intuition School staff when needed.
Supporting Literacy and Communication
Our weekly library sessions complement the literacy work taking place at school.
Students may use their visit to find books linked to current topics, explore subjects they are interested in or simply choose something they would like to read for enjoyment.
For students who may find traditional reading activities more challenging, the library provides different ways to engage with literacy, including picture books, graphic novels, reference materials, accessible texts and digital resources.
Building Confidence in the Community
For some of our young people, accessing community spaces can initially feel unfamiliar or overwhelming. Visiting regularly can help make these environments more predictable and manageable.
Over time, students can become increasingly familiar with the library environment, its routines and the people who work there.
Our staff provide individualised support and make reasonable adjustments according to each student's needs, helping them participate successfully while gradually developing confidence and independence.
A Regular Part of Life at Intuition School
Weekly community visits are an important part of our wider approach to education.
They provide meaningful opportunities to connect classroom learning with everyday life while supporting students' personal, social and emotional development.
Our local libraries offer welcoming spaces where our students can read, discover, make choices, develop new interests and build confidence within their community.
We are proud to make these experiences a regular part of life at Intuition School.
